XILINX – EMBEDDED IN THE FUTURE

The future is Embedded, says Giles Peckham, Regional Marketing Director at Xilinx, and his company is not about to miss the boat.

Xilinx sees embedded vision as a key and pervasive megatrend that is shaping the future of the electronics industry.

Providing machines with the ability to see, sense, and immediately respond to the world creates unique opportunities for system differentiation; however, this also creates challenges in how designers create next-generation architectures and bring them to market.

Integrating disparate subsystems including video and vision I/O with multiple image processing pipelines, and enabling these embeddedvision systems to perform vision-based analytics in real time is a complex task that requires tight coordination between hardware and software teams.

Timely and relevant

To remain timely and relevant in the market, leading development teams are exploiting Xilinx’s All Programmable devices in their next-generation systems to take advantage of the devices’ programmable hardware, software, and I/O capabilities. Xilinx provides embedded vision developers with a suite of technologies that support both hardware and software design.

Xilinx offers devices and complete acceleration stacks (Reconfigurable Acceleration Stack and reVISION ( https:// www.xilinx.com/products/ design-tools/embeddedvision-zone.html )
providing better performance, flexibility and system optimising compilation for both Computer Vision and Machine Learning, and supporting multiple levels of design abstraction. These speed the development of embedded vision applications in markets where systems must be highly differentiated, extremely responsive, and able immediately to adapt to the latest algorithms and image sensors.

Not all embedded

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is another key industry for Xilinx as it is driving the fourth wave of the industrial revolution. It is dramatically altering manufacturing, energy, transportation, cities, medical, and other industrial sectors. Most experts believe that IIoT is happening now and with very tangible, measurable business impact. The IIoT enables companies to collect, aggregate, and analyze data from sensors to maximize the efficiency of machines and the throughput of an entire operation.

Only Xilinx provides a flexible, standards based solution that combines software programmability, realtime processing, hardware optimization and any-to-any connectivity with the security and safety needed for Industrial IoT systems, including low cycle times, deterministic performance, and low latency. Xilinx SDAccel, SDSoC, and Vivado High-Level Synthesis enables customers to quickly develop their smarter, connected, and differentiated applications.

Xilinx

As for Xilinx itself, it’s an American semiconductor company founded in 1984. The company is well known for inventing the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and as the first semiconductor company with a fabless manufacturing fabless model. Founded in Silicon Valley, the company is headquartered in San Jose, California. The current CEO and President is Moshe Gavrielov.

The NASDAQ quoted company announced $2.35bn of revenues for the last fiscal year. Six years ago the company started its corporate transformation from the Programmable Logic Company to an All Programmable company delivering system-level solutions. Today Xilinx’s portfolio combines All Programmable devices in the categories of FPGAs, SoCs, MPSoCs, RFSoCs and 3DICs, as well as All Programming models, including software-defined development environments.
